At-home whitening does not always mean a shop-bought kit
The NHS describes whitening with a kit prescribed by a dentist as well as treatment at a dental surgery. A dentist-prescribed home treatment is different from choosing a product yourself online or in a shop.
Ask whether an assessment is included, who supplies the treatment and how you will be shown to use it. If home whitening is being discussed, ask about the prescribed schedule and the contact route for questions rather than assuming a routine from the packaging of another product.
What should I check about the provider?
The General Dental Council explains that whitening should follow a registered dentist's assessment and prescription. Treatment may be carried out by the dentist or by specified registered dental professionals working to that prescription. Check the person and arrangements, not simply a business logo.
Ask for the provider's name and registration details, and use the GDC register to check them. If the description of a service is unclear, get an explanation before agreeing to treatment. A booking location on its own does not establish a professional's qualifications.
Compare the full cost and the support
Write down what each option includes: assessment, treatment, instructions, any appointments and follow-up arrangements. A shelf price and an appointment fee are not necessarily prices for the same things. Ask about additional costs before making your choice.
Think about what fits your own routine, too. Would you prefer to ask questions in person, or discuss a dentist-prescribed home option with your dental team? There is no need to choose on someone else's timetable or assume a more expensive option must suit you better.
